Every now and then, there comes a time when we must become more than what we are. When one man will rise up and claim the title of hero. Swords will shatter, prophecies will be fulfilled. When such a time comes, Kain Highwind stands at the ready. He dons his armor. He polishes his spear. And then he proceeds to stab his best friend in the face.

I can’t say I always go for the betraying childhood friend, but I do think Kain Highwind is a thing of great awesome. The original form of the Final Fantasy man of few words and copious moral ambiguity, he’s been backstabbing downstabbing paladins since before some of my visitors were born. But he’s still around today, and that says something in his favor. He is the RPG Archetype That Cannot Die. And this is one of the oldest and largest Final Fantasy IV tributes out there, thanks largely to Alex of leknaat.org, from whom I adopted the shrine.
