Kain and his best friend Cecil are orphans who have been raised by the King of Baron. While Cecil chose to become a Dark Knight, Kain Highwind has chosen the road less travelled by becoming a dragoon. Both succeed greatly in their chosen paths, Cecil becoming captain of the air force, and Kain taking command of the dragoons. However, there is one thing that Cecil has had more success with- Rosa. Once Kain's girlfriend, and still his love, he struggles not to let his jealousy get the better of him. He is a man of few words, but one of deep feeling. When Cecil begins to question the King's authority, Kain stands by his side and defends him, which leads him on an epic quest that changes the fate of Baron, the world, and, most importantly, his friendship with Cecil.
